Broadbent says NDP ‘should be worried’ Libs won’t live up to commitments in upcoming budget, must keep pressure on bychelseanash cdnpoli
Former NDP leader Ed Broadbent, pictured with NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in 2019, says the NDP shouldn't trust the Liberals, and must keep pushing to ensure the terms of the confidence and supply agreement are met.The story link will be added automatically. In the ramp-up to the upcoming federal budget, the New Democrats have found themselves with more elbow room at the negotiating table this year, thanks to their recent confidence and supply agreement with the governing Liberals.
“In international relations language, they should go into this with faith but also with a determination to verify and to verify rigorously, to make sure the government lives up to its commitments,” Broadbent said. Broadbent said he thinks there’s enough of a progressive agenda within the agreement for the NDP to limit its focus to ensuring the Liberals deliver.
Broadbent said the promises made in the agreement are “very attractive in wording,” but pointed out the Liberals have been talking about dental care and pharmacare in their platforms for a while without much progress on those fronts. “That’s always been a bit of a football kicked around Ottawa. You know, what do you consider to be a subsidy?”
Blaikie said this agreement was a way to avoid a much-too-soon election while also getting a budget the NDP would be “much happier voting for that includes dental care.” Blaikie said he doubts the Liberals would renege on promises announced mere weeks before the budget, but he also said he doubts they will deliver on any additional NDP budget wish-list items, like a wealth tax. The focus for the NDP remains on delivering what’s in the agreement, and perhaps in future budgets, they will be able to push for more, Blaikie said.
Stanford said the reason the economy is as stable as it is now—two years after the beginning of a global pandemic that saw many economists, including himself, predicting an economic depression—is because the government took an intervention approach. This included income supports, wage subsidies, and the direct expansion of public spending to stave off a more severe economic downturn.
