Brittney Griner is set to embark on a new chapter in her WNBA career, signing with the Atlanta Dream after 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury . The star center announced her decision in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday night, expressing her excitement for this fresh start and the opportunity to join a talented roster. Her agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, confirmed to The Associated Press that Griner will be signing a one-year deal with Atlanta.
Griner spent her entire WNBA career with Phoenix since being drafted No. 1 in 2013. Now 34, she decided this offseason to test free agency for the first time. The one-year contract aligns with the anticipation of a new collective bargaining agreement in 2026, potentially bringing significant salary increases. Griner missed the 2022 season after being detained in Russia for nearly 10 months on charges related to vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She was eventually released in a prisoner swap. Griner's arrival in Atlanta marks a significant acquisition for the franchise. She joins a squad led by Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, and the team is looking to build on their recent success, reaching the playoffs for the second consecutive year in 2022. The Dream also made a coaching change this offseason, bringing in Karl Smesko from Florida Gulf Coast. Griner, Howard, and Gray are currently participating in the new 3-on-3 league Unrivaled. Meanwhile, the Phoenix Mercury are undergoing their own changes, finalizing a trade to acquire Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun. The future of veteran Diana Taurasi also remains uncertain as she considers retirement
