Frankly, it seemed like she’d never left. No question, it’s early, but, at 32, she’s off to one of her best seasons, averaging 22 points and 8.8 rebounds. She remains a force. Considering the Mercury didn’t make the second round of the playoffs last season after making the finals in 2021, it’s safe to say they missed Griner when she was gone.They weren’t alone in that.
Besides the Baylor basketball team, a delegation from Griner’s high school, Aldine Nimitz, also showed up Wednesday, not to mention so many friends and family members that Griner apologized before the game for buying so many tickets,A row of fans behind the Mercury bench held up a banner proclaiming “Welcome Home Brittany.” The Baylor players, wearing “BG” T-shirts, threw more to the crowd.
Before Wednesday’s game, Griner told reporters that the reaction from fans since her return “stunned” her. One flew from Alaska to Los Angeles to see her play. A coupleComing back to Texas was different, though. “I miss Texas so much,” she said. “I miss being at home. Just the culture. When you’re from Texas, you know it’s like the best place to be.“I had barbecue when I first got back,” she said.“A lot of people think it’s a hate relationship, and it’s not,” she said. “I played some of my best basketball there.
