WNBA player Brittney Griner, 32, arrives at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Friday, Dec. 9, 2022. Griner was released by Russians in a prisoner exchange for arms dealer, Victor Bout, on Thursday. Griner was detained by the Russians after she was found with cartridges containing hashish oil in February this year. In August, Griner was given a nine-year sentence and moved to a Russian penal colony, Griner was flown to San Antonio for medical evaluation.
“So happy to have Brittney back on U.S. soil,” Roger Carstens, the State Department’s special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, wrote on Twitter. “Welcome home BG!” Griner’s family also thanked former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Mickey Bergman, the executive director of the Richardson Center for Global Engagement, for their help with Griner’s release.
“We pray for Paul and for the swift and safe return of all wrongfully-detained Americans,” the Griner family said.
