The Met Office is warning of a very 'serious' situation
Brits have been told to avoid drinking alcohol during the impending heatwave, as the Met Office warns of a "very serious situation". Far from being encouraged to get outside and enjoy a sunny beer garden, the weather experts have said that this is "not that type of weather" and have urged people to think twice before loading up on booze.
The red warning means that it is "very likely" that there will be loss of life and some experts have even claimed that "hundreds or thousands" of people could die in the heatwave. This comes as the government issued an official state of emergency, due to the impending heat.And health experts have issued guidance on staying safe during the unprecedented heat, with the avoidance of alcohol high up on the list.
"Alcohol also makes you sweat more. The combination of sweating more in the heat, and going to the toilet more, means you lose more fluid than you take in and become dehydrated unless you replace that lost fluid by drinking water."Those who do decide to enjoy a tipple during the hot weather are being advised to limit the amount of alcohol they consume and to drink plenty of water and soft drinks in between any boozy beverages, to fend off dehydration.
Other ways to stay safe in the heatwave include closing curtains, avoiding any unnecessary travel and remaining indoors during the hottest times of the day. People are also being advised to stay inside as much as possible, particularly between 11am and 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest.
