at the allied army’s field hospital at Mont-Saint-Jean. Around 500 amputations took place that day, with just 236 described as ‘successful’, and Ms Randall is helping uncover a ditch where the limbs are thought to have been discarded.

The Waterloo battlefield, some 12 miles south of Brussels, was the last stand of Napoleon Bonaparte, defeated by an allied army led by the Duke of Wellington. Waterloo Uncovered, which began in 2015, brings veterans to the site to help discover new finds, while also supporting their recovery after leaving the armed forces.“We all bring some baggage to us.

Amidst the therapeutic benefits, there is real archaeology, with more than 6,000 finds over the years. Television archaeologist and professor Tony Pollard, who is the lead academic for the excavations says the digs are shining new light on the battle. For example, at the Mont-Saint-Jean field hospital, he is learning about the almost industrial amputations and disposal of bodies. “Medical practice of the time was often primitive,” Mr Pollard says.

The project has already attracted attention from a swathe of historians and writers, including author Ken Follett, who visited last week, Napoleon biographer Andrew Roberts, Waterloo historian Andrew Field, Channel 4’s Time Team and Dan Snow’s History Hit podcast.
