Johnson’s call for a December 12 election was defeated on Monday night as he did not get the necessary backing from a two-thirds majority of lawmakers. Corbyn’s Labour party was among those voicing opposition. But on Tuesday, Corbyn changed his tune and backed an early poll as Labour’s conditions for an election—stopping the threat of a no-deal Brexit—has been temporarily removed with the Brexit deadline now pushed back to January 31.
On Monday, EU leaders granted to U.K. a three-month “flextension,” meaning that British lawmakers have until January 31 to ratify Johnson’s Brexit deal, but can leave at any point before then if they approve it before. Today, British lawmakers will again vote on whether to hold an early general election. The vote will likely be successful with the backing of the main opposition Labour party but lawmakers could also tack on amendments that could pose new headaches for the prime minister.: Under Britain’s Fixed Term Parliament Act, the U.K. is not due for an election until May 2022.
