Federica Brignone of Italy claimed victory in the women's giant slalom at the 2023 Alpine skiing world championships, becoming the oldest female medalist in the event's history.
Federica Brignone of Italy triumphed in the women's giant slalom at the Alpine skiing world championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, on Thursday. Brignone edged out Alice Robinson of New Zealand by 0.90 seconds, securing her second medal at these championships after winning silver in super-G a week prior. Paula Moltzan of the United States clinched the bronze medal, finishing 2.62 seconds behind Brignone and earning her first individual world championship medal.
Britt Richardson, representing Canada, placed 10th, 3.89 seconds behind Brignone, while fellow Canadian Valerie Grenier finished 14th. Defending champion Mikaela Shiffrin opted out of the event, citing her lack of readiness to compete in giant slalom following a crash in November. Brignone's victory marks the first time an Italian skier has won the event since Deborah Compagnoni's consecutive wins in 1996-97. At 34 years and 7 months, Brignone became the oldest female medalist at the world championships, surpassing Lindsey Vonn's record set in 2019. This achievement cements Brignone's place in skiing history. Vonn, who returned to competition at the age of 40 this season after nearly six years of retirement, does not compete in giant slalom anymore.
