A baseless conspiracy theory accusing French First Lady Brigitte Macron of actually being her brother in disguise has resurfaced on social media, sparking controversy and debate.
A resurfaced conspiracy theory alleging that French First Lady Brigitte Macron is actually her brother in disguise has ignited controversy on social media . The unfounded claim, which originated in 2017, gained traction after a Twitter user posted a childhood photo of Brigitte's brother, Jean-Michel Trogneux, alongside a picture of Brigitte, drawing comparisons between their appearances.
This led to a wave of comments, some expressing belief in the theory and others condemning it as misinformation. The conspiracy theory, promoted by self-proclaimed journalist Natacha Rey and spiritual medium Amandine Roy, gained renewed attention ahead of the 2022 French presidential election. Rey asserted that Brigitte Macron never existed and that her brother had undergone gender reassignment. This baseless accusation was further fueled by a manipulated image comparing Jean-Michel as a child to Brigitte, despite the fact that Jean-Michel was born a female.Brigitte Macron took legal action against both Rey and Roy, successfully winning a defamation case in September. The French court ordered them to pay €8,000 in damages to Brigitte and €5,000 to her brother. Emmanuel Macron himself addressed the controversy last year, stating that he was aware of the outlandish claims circulating online. He expressed frustration and disbelief but ultimately chose to dismiss them as the work of internet “crazies.” GLAAD, an organization advocating for LGBTQ+ acceptance, also condemned the spread of such harmful conspiracy theories, highlighting their malicious intent to target public figures and create a false narrative about their gender identity
