“I think we’re going to break Netflix,” says one fan awaiting Season 2 of the Shondaland drama, focusing on Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and love interest Kate Sharma.
There’s an easy way to identify a serious fan of “Bridgerton,” the popular Shondaland Netflix series: ask them if they know when the series’ second season will drop.
“I’ve known the March 25 date since it was announced,” said E.M. Williams, a Toronto marketing consultant and fantasy author. “I’m travelling for business that day, but it’s definitely on my hit list for that weekend.” Quinn’s fictional aristocratic family, the Bridgertons, includes a widowed dowager viscountess and her eight children, named alphabetically from Anthony, the eldest, to Hyacinth, the youngest. The first season of the series, which made its debut on Christmas Day 2020, was devoted to the eldest daughter, Daphne , and made her love interest, actor Regé-Jean Page , a byword for sexy.
“It’s not as if I were writing a history book to begin with,” said Quinn. “The backdrop was as accurate as I could make it, but it had a fairy-tale quality and the characters behaved in some ways that were very modern, so expanding the universe that way works well. I want as many people as possible to see themselves in the happy ending.Jain is delighted with the casting of ethnically Indian actors in lead roles in Season 2.
The audience, too, is multicultural and global — both for the show and for the books. Unlike Jain, not everyone read the books before watching Season 1. “It was like a confection,” said Williams. “I love how frothy and sumptuous the costumes and that world are, and it was wonderful to see people getting together when we haven’t been able to. It was a shot of pleasure. I’ve never wanted eye candy more desperately in my life.”
