Designer Esé Azénabor Grembowski has risen from selling dresses on eBay to become one of the hottest names in bridal haute couture.
The 38-year-old’s haute couture is renowned for its intricate hand beading and embroidery, and her bridal gowns look just as much at home on a fashion runway as they do on a church aisle.“It’s crazy, isn’t it?” Grembowski said cheerfully in an interview at the glitzy showroom last month. “Back then I was like, ‘Just give me enough money to pay my rent,’ ” she said. “I didn’t know where this was going to lead me. I’m very clear where we’re headed now.”

Her mother, Sarah Azénabor, owned a catering business. She and a handful of women worked around the clock making doughnuts, pies and egg rolls that were delivered to doorsteps by 40 men on bicycles with little coolers. After getting a bachelor’s degree in accounting at the University of Windsor in Ontario, she headed to Dallas in 2010 to get her MBA at Southern Methodist University. Her plan was to return to Canada and her job as a certified public accountant for Deloitte & Touche.
A friend had already suggested that Chambers meet the 29-year-old, so Chambers agreed to swing by her downtown apartment to take a look at her evening dress collection.“It took five minutes before I said to her: ‘I’m going to be able to say I knew you when,’ ” Chambers recalled. “And now I can.”From 2010 through 2013, Grembowski sold her evening dresses from her apartment or on eBay for less than the cost of materials — never mind her hours of tedious work.
