San Francisco water reuse company Epic Cleantec created a beer made from recycled grey water from a SoMa luxury apartment building.

Yes, it’s a style I’ve had many times: a light, crisp Kolsch. But unlike any other beer I’ve had before, this one was made from recycled water.

San Francisco water reuse company Epic Cleantec teamed up with Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company to create Epic OneWater Brew, aproject that’s more of an attention-grabbing stunt for a green building conference than a legitimate entry into the beer industry. The beer is not for sale, but its message is salient.

Epic Cleantec co-founder and CEO Aaron Tartakovsky pictured at company headquarters on Market and South Van Ness.In 2022, San Francisco became the first city in the country to require new development projects of 100,000 gross square feet or more to incorporate an onsite water reuse system. Epic Cleantec is the maker of one of those reuse systems. Tartakovsky said the system they are operating in the Fifteen Fifty apartment building at 1550 Mission St.
