Brendan Fraser details a bizarre George of the Jungle monkey incident in which a Capucchin monkey became a little too irritated on set.
While Nope has shown a scary reminder of the dangers of such filmmaking, Brendan Fraser recalls a more hilarious and bizarre monkey incident from the set of George of the Jungle. The 1997 Disney film acted as a live-action adaptation of 1967 animated show of the same name, centered on the titular man who after being raised in the jungle by animals after the plane he was aboard as a baby crashed learns the ways of the world when he meets and falls in love with wealthy heiress Ursula.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Deadline at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Brendan Fraser reflected on his time making the 1997 family favorite George of the Jungle. The actor specifically looked back at a scene involving his titular vine-swinger interacting with a capucchin monkey, detailing the bizarre incident that occurred with the very-real monkey that led to him "killing himself with laughter.
There were real monkeys on [George of the Jungle], Mr. Binks was real. He was a very naughty, little monkey. ... Mr. Binks was a boy monkey, Mr. Binks was a Disney monkey. Boy Disney monkeys don't show their boyness in a Disney film. So Mr. Binks had a little bikini, little fur bikini, and the thing about apes, monkeys in particular, they become teenagers at some point, and they age out, and they become incorrigible and they bite and scratch – and that's nasty and scary.
Briefly taking a break from blockbuster filmmaking in the acclaimed Gods and Monsters, Fraser would cement his star power with 1999's The Mummy. Debuting to similarly mixed reviews as George of the Jungle, the film would go on to be an even bigger box office hit, grossing over $416 million against its $80 million production budget.
Though the years following saw Fraser enjoy a variety of hits and misses ranging from the 2008 adaptation of Journey to the Center of the Earth to the 2010 family movie Furry Vengeance, Fraser has since enjoyed a career resurgence. Beginning with Showtime's The Affair, the actor has gone on to score acclaim for his performances in HBO Max's Doom Patrol, FX's Trust and more recently Darren Aronofsky's The Whale, for which he's nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor.
