Metastasizing breast cancer cells spread more aggressively during sleep, according to new research.

reports. Researchers monitored levels of these wayfaring cells, known as circulating tumor cells in human breast cancer patients and mouse breast cancer models. In both instances,. Nearly 80% of CTCs in people and nearly 90% of those in mice were generated during sleep.

When researchers injected both types of CTCs into tumor-free mice, a higher concentration of the sleep-shed cells built up within the mice’s lungs than CTCs that were shed during waking hours. More work needs to be done to determine whether this pattern also shows up in other cancers and whether this discovery could influence cancer treatment plans in the future.
