BREAKING: Heat warning issued for TerraceBC, surrounding areas as temperatures soar
Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Terrace and the surrounding area Sunday, with unseasonably high temperatures expected to persist throughout the week. Daytime highs are forecasted to reach 30°C, while overnight lows hover near 15°C from Monday to Thursday.
A plume of hot air is responsible for this early season heat wave and is expected to affect coastal British Columbia, bringing temperatures 10 degrees to 15 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages during the day and approximately 10 degrees above normal overnight lows. The warmer weather will continue until Friday when temperatures are anticipated to cool significantly as the ridge of high pressure moves eastward.
Environment Canada and local health officials are warning residents that the risk of heat-related illnesses will increase, particularly for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and those working or exercising outdoors. Symptoms of heat illness can include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
As the region faces elevated health and safety risks due to the heat, Environment Canada and health officials are urging the public to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool during this period. Authorities advise the public to drink plenty of water even before feeling thirsty and to stay in a cool place.
