BREAKING: BC Wildfire Service responds to three wildfires near TerraceBC
BC Wildfire Service is currently fighting an “out of control” wildfire 12 km north of Kitselas Rd. This blaze, discovered on June 3 at 5:40 a.m., has already burned three hectares and continues to resist suppression efforts. The situation comes just days after Terrace’s fire danger rating was escalated to “high” due to extremely dry forest conditions.
Officials believe the Kitselas fire, similar to the two others recently detected in the vicinity, was likely caused by human activity. On June 3, the wildfire service had two initial attack crews and a helicopter deployed at the site to combat the flames, according to a BC Wildfire Service spokesperson.
The Kitselas fire is one of three wildfires that the BC Wildfire Service is currently tackling in the Terrace area. One of these fires, discovered on June 2 near New Remo, is classified as “being held.” It has burned less than a hectare and is unlikely to extend beyond its current boundaries. The other “out of control” fire was discovered on June 2 and is located 14.6 km down the Zymoetz River. It has also charred less than a hectare but continues to spread despite current suppression efforts.
BC Wildfire Service raised Terrace’s fire danger rating to “high” on May 31, an indication of the increased risk of wildfires due to the region’s extraordinarily dry forest conditions. The government agency cautioned the public about the potential for new fires to ignite rapidly, burn fiercely and pose considerable challenges to firefighting resources.Terrace’s overall rainfall in May was significantly below average, creating ideal conditions for the outbreak and spread of wildfires.
In response to the heightened fire risk, BC Wildfire Service issued a Category 2 and 3 fire ban for the Northwest Fire Centre, including the Skeena Fire Zone, on May 18. BC Wildfire Service says it continues to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to adhere to fire bans and remain cautious to prevent further wildfires.
