Risk levels at the dam were first raised in February, but now Vale says it has found signs of an imminent landslide likely to happen in the nearby mine, which could potentially cause the dam to collapse. On Thursday, prosecutors in the state of Minas Gerais, where both Barão de Cocais and Brumadinho are located, ordered the company to ensure the surrounding residents are aware of the imminent danger and know what to do in case of a disaster.
Vale said in a statement that its has evacuated residents nearest to the dam and is cooperating with prosecutors.Vale already faces potentially huge fines from the Brumadinho dam burst and another one in 2015 that killed 19 people in Mariana, also in Minas Gerais state. Both disasters are under investigation by Brazilian prosecutors.
