On Sunday, coach John Herdman will name his final 26-man squad for Canada’s return to the biggest stage in soccer. Over a quarter of them will be from Brampton.
; Junior Hoilett, a stoic versatile veteran; Osorio, Mr. TFC and a tigerish midfield heartbeat; Doneil Henry and Liam Millar, unfailing contributors in reserve who Herdman has often leaned on. When the seismic moment of qualification came on a frigid Sunday afternoon in March, it was Buchanan, Larin and Hoilett who scored the goals that defeated Jamaica and punched Canada’s ticket. Getting it done Brampton-style.
How huge is this moment? In between takeout and pickup orders, Caloiero’s been fielding calls from the New York Times in recent days, too. There’s big-time interest in the Brampton effect. What’s in the water? But the floodlights of the Save Max Sports Centre call to bring people together. The open trials for Brampton SC’s under-17 team are taking place on the outdoor field, but indoors hundreds of teams from under-sevens all the way up are speaking the universal language of soccer. It’s an incredible facility, a hive of activity.
“Our core values are all about diversity and opportunities and if we price ourselves out of the market we’re hurting the people who have helped build this club and we’re not going to bring in the top talent,” says Carabin. “Because the top talent comes from historically families that don’t have the means that others have. So we don’t want to be a chequebook club.”
And the next generation? “Just that bloody two years is missing. Everything was a s--t show with COVID and that,” laments Brodie in true Glasgow fashion, the only man in short sleeves. “I mean it’s wonderfully multicultural here, isn’t it? That’s the big thing. The togetherness of it and how much it brings them in. We’re here to get these kids to enjoy the game first off, to get better and to hopefully they’ll do well at it.
