With the Halifax Mooseheads wearing special jerseys to raise money for families dealing with cancer, MacPhee scored a key goal in a 5-1 win against the Sherbrooke Phoenix at the Scotiabank Centre. It was just his second goal of the season and he pointed skyward on his way to high-five his teammates.
Even the team he scored against held meaning for MacPhee. It was during the Mooseheads' third-round series against the Phoenix seven months ago that MacPhee had to step away from it all to be by his mother's side in her final days. "My mom cared so much about me she wouldn't tell me any details through the whole process. She knew I was playing hockey and she didn't want it to be in my head."Because MacPhee was so invested in the Mooseheads' playoff run back in the spring, his mother decided to keep the extent of her health issues a secret from him and his brother until very close to the end.
"The whole thing happened so quick. She was at a lower stage and then it escalated really quickly. I found out maybe a month before and they wouldn't tell me exactly what it was. They just said 'Here's the deal for why she was in the hospital' and then when she died the doctor explained more to us about it."
