Bradley Cooper's Maestro controversy explained.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Bradley Cooper's appearance in his upcoming movie, Maestro, has stirred controversy — here's why. Highlighting American composer Leonard Bernstein's relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre, Maestro is a biopic directed by Bradley Cooper. Apart from directing the film, Bradley Cooper also plays Leonard Bernstein in the movie, while Carey Mulligan portrays Felicia Montealegre.
Judging from Maestro's first trailer and promotional stills, many viewers have appreciated the film's cinematography, Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan's on-screen chemistry, and its visual representation of Leonard Bernstein's forte as a conductor. However, in all of this praise and admiration, Maestro has also garnered immense criticism. Most of this criticism revolves around Bradley Cooper's appearance in the movie.
Why Bradley Cooper's Maestro Appearance Is Controversial Maestro's stills and trailer feature Bradley Cooper with facial prosthetics that make his nose appear bigger. Since Leonard Bernstein was Jewish, Bradley Cooper's fake nose seems to perpetuate harmful stereotypes, reinforcing antisemitic beliefs that have targeted Jewish people in the past. Many have pointed out that the nose prosthetic was unnecessary, and Bradley Cooper could have played Leonard Bernstein without it.
In their note, Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Beinstein then defended Bradley Cooper by saying that it breaks their heart to see how the actor's efforts are being misunderstood by many. They acknowledged that even though Bradley Cooper used makeup to amplify his resemblance with Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, they are perfectly fine with it and assured that even their father wouldn't have had a problem with it.
