Father and stepson die at Big Bend National Park while hiking in a triple-digit heat...
The 31-year-old man had gone hiking around 6 p.m. Friday on the Marufo hiking trail with his two stepsons, ages 14 and 21, in temperatures park rangers would later say peaked at 119 degrees. When his 14-year-old stepson lost consciousness, the man headed back to his vehicle in an attempt to drive off in search of help, while the older brother attempted to carry the boy back to the trailhead.
"Our entire park community sends our deep condolences to the family and great appreciation to the dedicated first responders who reached the scene under extreme conditions," said Park Information Officer Tom VandenBerg. The deaths come amid a heat wave causing high-degree temperatures across Texas "Temperatures reach over 110+ every day along the Rio Grande and throughout the desert areas of Big Bend. These are extremely dangerous/ deadly temperatures! Hikers should be OFF TRAILS in the afternoon. Stay hydrated. Limit your exposure," the alert read. The park was found to have the third-highest per capita fatality rate in the National Park Service according to a study by Backpacker, an outdoor magazine.
"Your safety in the parks depends more — much more — on the decisions you make than the parks you choose to visit." according to the publication.
