Police say a northbound Mazda MX3 crossed the highway’s centre line and hit a Pontiac Grand-Am travelling south. The lone occupant of the Mazda died at the scene

Oceanside RCMP say a two-vehicle collision on Island Highway West in Qualicum Bay Friday evening killed a 31-year-old Bowser resident.

The initial investigation found that a northbound Mazda MX3 crossed the highway’s centre line and hit a Pontiac Grand-Am travelling south. The lone occupant of the Mazda died at the scene, while the lone occupant of the Pontiac was uninjured. How or why the Mazda drifted into the oncoming land has not yet been determined, said Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth, who said the investigation is ongoing with an RCMP collision reconstructionist and the B.C. Coroners Service.

Anyone who saw the crash, which occurred 7:05 p.m. Friday, and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call Oceanside RCMP at 250-246-6111.
