Commuting options for Eastie and the near North Shore are about to get limited and longer

Drivers heading from East Boston or Logan International Airport toward downtown Boston will be directed to use the Ted Williams Tunnel when the Sumner Tunnel is closed for 36 weekends and then a four-month continuous stretch to allow for a major rehabilitation project.

The work will shutter the underground tunnel that runs one-way from East Boston to downtown Boston from Friday night through Monday morning for three dozen upcoming weekends, then for four continuous months next year, and then for another series of weekends in late 2023. "In our experience, to do it in these windows with an intense period of work allows us to not have this extend over much longer periods of time and much more consistent inconvenience," Transportation Secretary Jamey Tesler said Thursday."It is a more intense period of time. It will undoubtedly test people's patience during it, but we believe this is the best way to get this done with the least disruption to people.

Closing the Sumner for 40 weekends rather than for four continuous months next year would extend the project by 10 more months, MassDOT estimates. When the Sumner Tunnel is closed for a major upcoming rehabilitation project, state transportation officials will redirect motorists headed for I-93 northbound up into Revere and then Chelsea to access the interstate via the Tobin Bridge.

Issues in the Sumner that need addressing are numerous. The route features exposed rebar, chipped concrete, broken lights, cracked walls and a deteriorating road surface, and ventilation, drainage, security and fire suppression systems all need to be updated to modern code standards, MassDOT says.
