Twenty-seven nonbinary runners participated in the 127th Boston Marathon on Monday.

The annual marathon included the category for those who don't identify as men or women for the first time ever this year. The Boston Athletic Association made the announcement last year, saying that"non-binary athletes who have completed a marathon as a non-binary participant during the current qualifying window may submit an entry application into the 2023 Boston Marathon between September 12-16, 2022.

In the days leading up to the event, the Boston Marathon's Twitter account shared the photos and biographies of several selected runners."This week’s #QualifiedSpotlight features Cal Calamia , a transgender marathoner & inclusivity activist. Cal has been working with races around the world to add this category & create an inclusive and equitable race experience for transgender and non-binary athletes," the marathon tweeted last week.

They will be running in this year's #BostonMarathon in the first ever non-binary category! They also placed second in the category in the 2022 Chicago Marathon. In addition, they are the founder of the Non-Binary+ Run Club in San Francisco. Let’s hear it for Cal!#BQ #oneBOSTON pic.twitter.com/iaCAsohp2L"They will be running in this year's #BostonMarathon in the first ever non-binary category! They also placed second in the category in the 2022 Chicago Marathon.

When the nonbinary category was first announced, its qualification times were the same as that of the women's category.According to the BAA,"we do not yet have enough data to establish non-binary qualifying times. Therefore, we will use the times listed here, as they are inclusive of the qualifying times for the two existing divisions. As we prepare for future races, participants can expect non-binary times to be updated accordingly.

There were 30,239 participants who entered the marathon, per the BAA. This includes the 27 nonbinary runners, as well as 17,272 men and 12,940 women.
