Boris Johnson is now widely expected to resign
It comes after a wave of ministerial resignations in the last 36 hours and a string of scandals that have plagued his recent premiership. The PM clung onto power until the last moment but was ultimately forced out.
This morning , new chancellor Nadhim Zahawi who was appointed on Tuesday evening told Mr Johnson: "You must do the right thing and go now." Brandon Lewis quit his cabinet post as Northern Ireland Secretary saying the Government requires “honesty, integrity and mutual respect” and it is “now past the point of no return”.
Education Secretary Michelle Donelan resigned and science minister George Freeman wrote to the Prime Minister to say he no longer has confidence in his leadership. Defence Secretary and MP for Preston and Wyre North Ben Wallace indicated this morning he was staying in post along with a number of others who “have an obligation to keep this country safe, no matter who is PM”. He said: "The Party has a mechanism to change leaders and that is the mechanism which I advise colleagues to use. In the meantime, the public would not forgive us if we left these Offices of State empty.
