Mr Johnson signalled more UK military assets will be deployed in Europe, revealing he has ‘agreed a package of support [with Nato], sending troops, ships and planes to defence Europe from north to’. Western leaders have spent the week trying to discourage Russian president Vladimir Putin from annexing Ukraine and stressing that a diplomatic path out of the crisis remains viable.The Ukrainian army is preparing to repel any incursion over its border but the world can only guess what Vladimir Putin is really planning about scaling back Russian military presence over the Ukrainian border in Belarus, close to the capital Kyiv.
The Kremlin responded to this sudden loss of position in its former sphere of influence by annexing Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula with a large Russian-speaking population. President Putin is seeking to secure a set of sweeping changes to defence arrangements in Europe after decades of Nato enlargement.
Nato, the US-dominated military alliance which the UK and the majority of European nations are members of, has expanded over the last two decades to cover eastern European and Baltic states.
