Iranian women’s experiences of family ties feature centrally across the nine stories of Divided Loyalties.
Those ties are close and secure, it’s true, but as often as not they involve a kind of intimacy that’s overwhelmingly contractual: ties come at a steep price.
Parvaaneh’s acts of self-sacrifice see no guarantees: not only does she not know whether her efforts will pay off, but she’s become, in effect, a social “nothing” by using her body as a “bargaining chip.” As a short story writer, poet and Simon Fraser University instructor, Nilofar Shidmehr favours a plain-spoken style, extensive plot, and a recognizable pattern that tends to feature an important realization on the final page.
