Not mere postcard vistas, Kathryn Willcock’s tales of muddy camps, floating homes, human skulls, mobsters give a twist to ‘Swinging Sixties’

To Kathryn Willcock, the B.C. coast — a “ragged edge runs along one side of the map as if it had been ripped off the spine of an atlas” — is awesome, a wellspring of “serious beauty.”

A gifted storyteller—warm, funny, generous — Willcock brings to vivid life the muddy camp on Bute Inlet where her father lived nine months of the year. Willcock recounts how her father “narrowly escaped dying of stupidity” after his arrest for being “inebriated and overly exuberant” and his ongoing struggles to keep financially afloat.

There are saucy portraits of colourful figures — clueless American tourists, drunk camp cooks and relatives, in particular, “lying, cheating, stab-you-in-the-back family members.” In fact, there’s no shortage of material to savour, from the Willcock’s unique house , and a disaster-prone camp kitchen to Dotty, her aunt . Dotty later taught young Kathryn how to apply eyeliner with a felt pen, “in case you’re out all night and have to go to work straight from the bar.
