John’s songs have moved me more deeply than nearly anyone else’s and to have had the gift of his friendship as well as getting to sing his masterpiece, 'Angel from Montgomery,' all these many years, have been two of my life's greatest gifts.
There are too many brilliant songs to single out here tonight from the astonishing body of work John has created these last six decades. If he only wrote ‘how the hell can a person, go to work in the mornin, come home in the evening, and have nothing to say.’….or any isolated verse or chorus of the hundreds he’s given us, that would be enough.
