Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie is planning to run for leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.
CP24 has learned that an exploratory committee has been assembled and she will formally register at a later date.
In early May, Crombie could be seen rubbing elbows with high-profile politicians and strategists at the Liberal National Convention in Ottawa, prompting many to question whether she was interested in leadership. The announcement Tuesday may come as a surprise to some political pundits considering Mississauga’s newfound independence., effectively making Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon single-tier cities in the next two years.
This was something Crombie campaigned on in October 2022 and has long supported along with her predecessor Hazel McCallion. If Crombie wins and becomes the next Ontario Liberal Party leader, she would be leaving her city to transition to a new style of governance under the helm of a new mayor. In October 2022, she was re-elected for a third term with more than 77 per cent of the vote.
