The Starliner will take a different approach in departing from the ISS, using its thrusters to push back farther from the space station before it begins its descent to Earth.

The Boeing Starliner capsule, which transported two NASA astronauts, is set to leave the International Space Station next week — empty. The Starliner will return to earth on Sept. 6, though the astronauts will remain aboard the ISS until February 2025 before being transported home in a SpaceX capsule.

“It’s been a journey to get here and we’re excited to have Starliner” come home, said NASA’s commercial crew program manager Steve Stich.Anthony Vareha, a flight director with NASA, told reporters that the Starliner will now use a modified flight plan to better accommodate an uncrewed vessel — Friday’s departure will see the Starliner thrust farther back from the ISS. Officials said 27 of the craft’s 28 thrusters appear to be working properly and they’re anticipating a successful return.
