“He makes a big difference in these kinds of games,” Young said. “He has been there and done it. He’s got the personality to manage these situations and instill confidence in the players. And guys are prepared; he communicates before the game in terms of how guys may be used, so they know their role.”
Heaney worked through the top of the lineup, which included a lefty and two switch-hitters in the top five hitters. Dunning came on to end the inning and pitched into the sixth before Henderson came up again. That’s when Bochy turned to Smith, a veteran who can still spin a slider. He worked away, further away and furthest against Henderson to end the inning.
