Legendary college basketball coach Bob Knight died Wednesday. He was 83.
The post did not specify a cause of death, though it did ask that “in lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Coach with a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association or Marian University.”The 1976 team went 32-0 — the last men’s team to win the NCAA basketball championship undefeated.The 1981 team was led by Isiah Thomas and set a “record” at the time by winning the title despite suffering nine regular-season losses.
But controversy also followed Mr. Knight — a stern disciplinarian and old-school coach whose style increasingly went out of fashion over his decades in coaching. In 1985, during a game against Purdue, incensed at a foul call, he threw a chair from the IU bench across the floor toward an official and the Purdue shooter.
IU administrators then told Mr. Knight that his next temper loss would lead to his firing — and that happened in 2000, when he was accused of grabbing a student on campus.
