Three things you need to know about the Blue Jays’ 4-1 win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Saturday:
After being held to just one run over the first six innings, scoring only on a groundout by Raimel Tapia and going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, the Jays finally broke through in the top of the seventh.
With one out, George Springer singled. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Matt Chapman walked around a Teoscar Hernandez strikeout and Bo Bichette came to the plate having seen a total of three pitches over his first three at-bats. The shortstop made up for that, lining the 10th pitch he saw from Duane Underwood Jr. into the left-field corner, clearing the bases with a three-run double. Bichette is hitting .391 over his past six games.Bichette’s long at-bat in the seventh began with ball one, then two straight foul balls off to the right, each of which just missed hitting Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who was in the on-deck circle getting ready to follow Bichette to the plate.
After the second one, Gurriel decided that discretion was the better part of valour and retreated back into the dugout to take his practice swings. Bichette would foul off four more pitches, though none in the vicinity of the on-deck circle.Santiago Espinal was hit on the left hand by a 98-m.p.h fastball in the top of the eighth inning, collapsing in agony at the plate. He was tended to by trainer Jose Ministral and left the game immediately.
X-rays were negative for a fracture, so Espinal is day-to-day with what they’re calling a left-hand contusion.
