BMW's Munich plant, known for producing iconic engines, has ceased internal combustion engine production, marking a significant shift towards electric vehicles. While 1,200 workers have been reassigned within the company, BMW emphasizes its commitment to supporting all employees during this transition.
For more than a century, BMW ’s Munich plant has made engines – engines that many fans consider the key reason BMW s are so enjoyable to drive. Last fall, that all stopped. BMW ceased production of internal combustion engines at its oldest plant, marking the end of an era for the brand and the beginning of an unclear transition period for workers. The plant, which used to employ 7,800, is being retooled for the electric era.
The engine part of plant has closed, but the assembly part is continuing to produce vehicles. While 6,600 people still work at the plant, 1,200 workers have been given new jobs within the company, BMW said. Unlike many other makers, BMW said it won’t cut jobs during the transition. Chief executive officer Oliver Zipse made the “At the end of the day, their job was gone, and they loved their job,” Ilka Horstmeier, the board member for people, real estate and labour relations at BMW AG, said in an interview on the sidelines of the One Young World forum in Montreal in September. “Engine people are engine people. These people build the 12-cylinder engine, eight-cylinder engines. The engines they were very proud of.” On the day BMW leadership communicated the decision to workers at the engine plant, Horstmeier said it was important to reassure them the company was going to take care of everyone. “We are taking our current people with us on that journey,” she said. That journey is a massive one, changing BMW into a car company that makes a lot more electric vehicles. While BMW will still produce engines at other plants and it hasn’t set its own target for ending the production of gas-powered cars, regulations in Europe will ban companies from selling new gas-powered passenger vehicles from 2035. In Canada, 2035 will bring the end of sales of new cars that are powered only by gas, although plug-in hybrids will still be allowe
