The Canucks chased another game and lost in the shootout to a team that, incredibly, might take the Central Division
The Vancouver Canucks played the 23rd 3-2 game of their season on Saturday against the Blues at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, losing in a shootout by that very score.
It’s a remarkable finish to the season for the Blues, the win putting them in position to finish first in the Central Division, a run that began literally from as far back as possible: they were dead last in the NHL on Jan. 3. Scoring firstThe Blues’ first-period goal by Schenn marked the 49th time the opposition scored first in a Canucks game this season. That’s the same total as in 2017-18.
The Petter-zoneElias Pettersson’s one-timer from the top of the face-off circle has been one of the great things about this season. He’s not scored much in 2019, but that he got off one of his elite slappers in the season’s final season was a nice capper to a great rookie season. The Blues’ surge is also about their team play; according to the expected-goals metric — which weights shots based on the goal probability of where they’re taken from — they’re among the best in the league in creating and preventing quality shots.
