A massive leak of police department data is causing a stir, as a hacktivist group known as Distributed Denial of Secrets dropped what it claims is 269GB of files from a large number of agencies
It appears the leaks are legitimate and could stem from an attack on a web hosting company, Netsential, which handles websites for a number of police agencies, including so-called Fusion Centers. Such facilities support collaboration and communication amongst America’s state and local law enforcement bodies. They produce all manner of material, from guides to alerts, all of which appear in the purported leak.
“Netsential confirmed that this compromise was likely the result of a threat actor who leveraged a compromised Netsential customer user account and the web platform’s upload feature to introduce malicious content, allowing for the exfiltration of other Netsential customer data,” the alert obtained by Krebs read.Who is Distributed Denial of Secrets?
The identity or identities of the Distributed Denial of Secrets group remains a mystery. Launched in late 2018, it has previously been credited with some significant leaks, including a large batch of. Towards the end of last week, it was also hosting a copy of John Bolton’s explosive book on the Trump administration, though its tweet promoting the fact was removed.
Sometimes described as an alternative Wikileaks, it tweeted yesterday that it doesn’t get involved in hacking individuals and organizations. It simply provides a “stable platform” for data that may have been pilfered. Journalist Emma Best is its only non-anonymous member. Talking about the group last year, she told theTransparency one way or another, which will force the NYPD to publicly divulge how they use surveillance tools.
