For those who watched Trent Thornton make his MLB debut for the BlueJays, it was certainly hard not to notice his unique pitching delivery. The 25-year-old opened up about his funky mechanics on The Jeff Blair Show.
“When I was in high-A with the Houston Astros, I was playing out in Lancaster, California and it’s super, super windy there. There were a couple of times that I actually fell of the mound, the wind blew me over,” he said. “I was like, ‘Man, I might need to change my delivery here.'”“I kind of went to a conventional leg lift and that screwed up all my timing, my rhythm, my tempo,” he said.
All told, Thornton allowed just two hits on 75 pitches through five innings against the Tigers, giving up zero runs with no errors. Despite his performance, Toronto couldn’t come away with the win and split the four-game series. The club begins a new series Monday night against the Baltimore Orioles.
