On the surface, the 5\u002D4 record the Blue Jays compiled in their previous nine games before beginning a week\u002Dlong home stand on Monday night at the Rogers Centre might seem ordinary.
The Jays also got another solid starting effort from their rotation, this time from Chris Bassitt, who went 6.1 innings for the win and has now allowed just six earned runs combined in his past four outings and improved to 3-2 on the season.
Even with a pitch count at 98, it looked like Bassitt was poised to go further, but the veteran right-hander exited after calling manager John Schneider to the mound and pointing to his elbow. Schneider was accompanied by trainer Voon Chong, who walked with Bassitt back to the Jays dugout.The Jays added some insurance in the seventh when Matt Chapman continued his extra-base assault with a double to drive in Vlad Guerrero Jr., who led off the inning with a single.
With the win, the Jays improved to 14-9 and 5-2 in their limited body of work at the Rogers Centre while the White Sox slipped to 7-16. Bassitt continued a string of six consecutive strong starts for the Jays, allowing three hits and two runs while walking three and striking out four to lower his ERA to 4.82. In that six-game stretch of solid starts, the Jays pitchers have allowed just five runs over 39.2 innings while giving up just 18 hits.
The game marked former manager Charlie Montoyo’s first return to the city since being fired by the Jays last July. Montoyo is the Sox bench coach working alongside first-year manager Pedro Grifol.
