With the World Series complete, the Blue Jays didn’t waste any time getting down to off season business on Thursday officially parting ways with infielder Whit Merrifield.
The team announced that the $18 million US mutual option for 2024 was declined by both sides meaning Merrifield is now a free agent. It was always going to be a long shot that the Jays would pick up the option on Merrifield, who was acquired at the August trade deadline in 2022. Merrifield was a versatile option for manager John Schneider during his time with the Jays, often getting playing time in left field as well as second base. He was inconsistent at the plate, however, and didn’t start in either of the team’s playoff losses in Minnesota last month.
