It’s been a curious start to the season for BlueJays catcher Danny Jansen (TaoofStieb)
, which may serve him well as he attempts to get back on track. Comparing the two catchers’ respective wins above replacement figures on Fangraphs is a curious exercise, as Maile sits at 0.2 and Jansen at -0.1.
It’s early, and the difference between these numbers at this point is essentially a rounding error, but it’s how those numbers are derived that’s interesting.enhanced their catcher’s defensive calculations this season, especially where it pertains to framing and, counterintuitively, Jansen’s defensive component of his WAR is actually better than Maile’s.
In fact, where his defence might have borne the greatest scrutiny entering the season, Jansen has largely delivered thus far. He has thrown out two of eight runners so far, and the work that he has put in with coach John Schneider seems to have helped Jansen get into better position to release throws.
After a passed ball in the first game of the season, where Jansen didn’t get his glove down, he has not let another by while working with a staff that ranks third in the MLB in wild pitches. Moreover, Jansen has looked very capable in receiving pitches and helping his pitchers with the strike zone. It’s still early, but Jansen ranks fourth in baseball inThere’s every reason to believe that Danny Jansen’s offense will begin to sort itself out as the season continues.
