It’s the first time (in a non-pandemic-shortened season) that the Jays have gone into September sitting in a playoff spot since 2016, when they held a two-game lead in the division over the Red Sox.

Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. A bad week, a bad month, heck, even a bad first half can be shrugged off in the knowledge that the six-month grind will always give you a chance to recover. But you can throw all that out the window once the calendar turns to the season’s final month.

The Jays missed out on a wild-card berth by one game last season, but went into September four-and-a-half games out of a playoff spot. The next thing the four-time all-star had to say indicated he might not necessarily feel as though it’s just another month. Matt Chapman is in his first September as a Blue Jay, but has been to the post-season twice with Oakland. He doesn’t think the calendar should make a difference.

“Nothing should change,” the shortstop said. “We should come to the field every day ready to win and ready to prepare as much as we can. But I mean, yeah, naturally I’m sure there is a little bit more.”
