Blue Jays acquiring starting pitcher Taijuan Walker from Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later.

To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Trent Thornton was transferred to the 45-day injured list, ending his season.

Walker has made five starts for the Mariners in 2020, registering a 4.00 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27 innings. He owns a career 3.95 ERA split between the Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old possesses a fastball that averages 93 m.p.h. and also features a slider, curveball and splitter. He is due to enter free agency at the conclusion of the 2020 campaign.

Toronto had become desperate for help in its starting rotation after recent injuries to Nate Pearson, Matt Shoemaker and Thornton. Blue Jays starters have only pitched 119.2 innings this season, which ranks them 26th in baseball. The lack of length from the rotation has forced manager Charlie Montoyo to lean heavily on his top bullpen arms.
