Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski scores an empty-net goal in front of Anaheim Ducks' Ondrej Kase during the third period of an NHL hockey game Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, in Anaheim, Calif. Werenski has spent his entire career with the Blue Jackets since the team selected him eighth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. The Michigan native scored three goals and had five assists in the team's first 13 games last year before a shoulder injury ended his season.
Taking Werenski's place while he recovers will be 19-year-old David Jiricek, just called up from the Cleveland Monsters, the team's AHL affiliate. Jiricek is considered one of the NHL's top young prospects. Jiricek made his NHL debut with the team last year, collecting two penalty minutes and five shots on goal, becoming the second-youngest defenseman to make his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets. Columbus picked him sixth overall in the 2022 NHL draft.
