Blue crab season persists in D.C. during the coronavirus crisis (Via Eater_DC)
The first day of April marked the official start of the Chesapeake Bay’s beloved blue crab season. While many restaurants around town are pressing pause on the warm-weather tradition until a dine-in ban gets lifted, some crab-centric operations are moving full steam ahead with deliveries.truck’s bread and butter, and owner Tim Walsh is optimistic the novel coronavirus won’t slow him down. Walsh, a 30-year restaurateur in the District, is taking catering orders out of his truck.
“As long as people are dropping [crab] pots we are going to keep buying,” Walsh says. “I have to support watermen. If they aren’t here, there’s no business to come back to.”Walsh’s truck pulls up to customers’ driveways and sets up a feasting station with brown paper. He says most of his business comes from repeat customers he’s accumulated for the past four years.
His catering market is families who are self-quarantined at home. He’s got six bookings through Sunday for dinners that last two and a half hours. It’s a one-man show: Walsh preps, cooks, and cleans up the party, all while maintaining strict sanitization standards. D.C.’s mild winter means mating starts earlier in the season — producing bigger crabs by late July and August.
