The nonprofit donates $2 million per year to support pediatric neurology research at...

, and it has focused on supporting Houston’s children and families since its inception.

“Consistency is important because then you can think long term. You can build for the future,” Zoghbi said. “You can be strategic when you know there will be some funding.” The Blue Bird Circle now has more than 300 volunteers, roughly 125 of which are active members. Many Blue Birds are retired, but some are working as doctors, lawyers, accountants and police officers.

They’ve also gone above and beyond to lend their support, Zoghbi said. When she first met a patient she suspected of having Rett syndrome, she asked Blue Birds to look through medical charts to find other patients with similar symptoms. One week later, they’d found 35 more children. The Blue Birds’ work, and a subsequent grant from the organization, kick-started Zoghbi’s research into Rett syndrome. She continued to study the disease and won the prestigious Kavli Prize in neuroscience last year.

This year volunteers donated books, games and other items to make gift bags for children for the centennial. The Blue Bird Circle may continue to make gift bags after 2023 because they can brighten a child’s day. The shop runs like a well-oiled machine, with approximately 12 volunteers onsite each day. The shop also has nine full-time employees who work in administration, bookkeeping, as porters and on the receiving dock.
