21-year-old Ama herself is flattered by the comparison, though she says Blood & Water has a distinctive style and viewpoint. “I grew up totally obsessed withof the show’s notable likeness to her “childhood favorite” show. “I think the shows share some similarities; however,is a young adult drama with thriller [and] mystery genre influence with uniquely South African experiences.

, the show explores grief and emotional trauma. Other scenes call out the Europeanization of African history and even the current political climate in South Africa. “I think that the show highlights some of the important issues the world is faced with today,” Ama explains. “Human trafficking is a disturbing reality, and I’m glad thatalso shows the devastation it leaves to family members.

With an array of emotions and not-so-typical teenage problems, she’s a complex character going through a difficult time in her life and — at the same time, struggling to learn what it means to grow up. According to Ama, channeling the varying emotions Puleng experiences throughout the show was difficult, but not impossible thanks to a supportive environment on set.

“It was challenging, but I had a great director. Nosipho Dumisa really helped us through the very emotional scenes, we could ask for a moment before they called action,” she explains. Her role inis her biggest role to date. “A lot of times I would draw from experience; Puleng is such a relatable character, she loves her family and that is why [she] embarks on this journey to try to find her sister. I am very close with my family.
