Vancouver Giants will need to find ways to limit Logan Stankoven and Olen Zellweger to have chance at advancing past Kamloops
Connor Bedard has skewed the statistics this season in the WHL.tallying 71 goals and 143 points in just 57 games with the Regina Pats has stolen the spotlight from players who would normally have absurd numbers in their own right.
Included in that list would be the 34 goals and 97 points that Kamloops centre Logan Stankoven amassed in a mere 48 games. He was fourth in league scoring, behind Bedard, Prince George Cougars forward Chase Wheatcroft and Winnipeg Ice forward Zach Benson . Also on that list is the 22 goals and 52 points that Zellweger managed in a measly 32 games with the Blazers. Those totals alone were the 13th best among defencemen in the WHL this season. Throw in his totals from his 22 games with Everett and he led all rearguards in goals by a whopping nine. He was second in points , one behind Ben Zloty of Winnipeg.
Giants coach Michael Dyck has been known to match lines in the past. It’ll be interesting to see if he tries it in this series, and who he tries it with. Overage centre Ty Thorpe would be a logical candidate, although he was also Vancouver’s top scorer in the regular season. This series features two of the league’s top draw men in Thorpe and Hofer , who were third and tied for fourth, respectively, in faceoff wins this season.
The right-handed Thorpe’s 58.8 per cent success rate was also best among the 27 players with 1,000 or more draws. Southpaw Hofer was sixth in the group at 56.5 per cent.Article contentCaptain Ty Thorpe on the preparation for the series with Kamloops.
