Sirens soon will sound each night in Atlantic City at 10, marking the arrival of a juvenile curfew prohibiting anyone under 18 from being on the streets without a parent or guardian, with only a few exceptions.

“It's been a rough few weeks here in Atlantic City,” Mayor Marty Small said Thursday at a Boardwalk news conference to announce the policy. As we get closer to Memorial Day and the summer season, you'll see an increased police presence on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. NBC10's Cydney Long has the details on this beefed up security after recent deadly violence there.

James Sarkos, the officer in charge of the city's police department, said those under 18 without a parent or guardian need to be off the streets before the siren sounds. Once it does, police officers are authorized to approach and question those who appear to be under the age of 18 to determine their status.

Sarkos said minors on the streets after 10 p.m. are more likely to engage in criminal activity, as well as to become the victims of crime.
