As the haze and smoke of wildfires settled on Ottawa, MPs sat until midnight discussing the 400 fires currently burning across the country.
When a situation in the provinces “becomes extremely difficult, as we’ve seen in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Alberta most recently, when they need additional resources, a request for assistance is made to the federal government and then we deploy the resources that we have available to them.”
Blair told reporters he’s been in touch with local MPs and held a second briefing on fires with opposition leaders on Monday night. “This is really quite sincerely a whole-of-government response that is required here. It’s not a partisan issue. It requires complete collaboration and collaboration requires a free flow of information.”
Seniors Minister Kamal Khera responded: “This has been an all-hands-on-deck approach. We are working in very close collaboration with municipalities, provinces and territories.” Lapointe said Canada is facing a “truly unprecedented” season of wildfires. The 3.3 million hectares that have already burned represent an area larger than Belgium, and of the 413 wildfires that are burning, 249 are out of control. “There have been 2,214 fires to date. The 10-year average for this time of the year is 1,671 fires,” she said.
“Without prescribed burns, this fuel gathers, builds and becomes dangerous. That is exactly what happened when we banned the ability of First Nations and Métis communities to have prescribed burns; unfortunately, this is still a reality in Canada,” he said.Article contentPhoto by Mike CoatesConservative MP Rick Perkins said the two largest wildfires in Nova Scotia, one of them still out of control, are in his riding.
